HuaTu Wood-Fired Studio

Huatu Studio is led by ceramic artist Yan Huatu, a Jingdezhen-based practitioner and recognised inheritor of traditional handmade porcelain techniques. In 2012, he founded Huatu Woodfired Studio, dedicating his practice to the creation of ceramic vessels through the slow and elemental process of wood firing.

His work centres on the timeless language of vessels — objects that carry both function and cultural memory. Guided by a philosophy rooted in simplicity, quietness, and restraint, Yan Huatu approaches clay with a deep respect for its natural character. The surfaces and forms of his ceramics embrace the raw beauty of material and the unpredictable marks left by fire and ash.

Drawing inspiration from Zen thought, his practice reflects a search for stillness and clarity, where the maker’s mind and the material become one. Through this process, each piece embodies a sense of calm, balance, and the contemplative beauty of handmade objects.
